Last Thursday ’s Fringe was the second of two “ filler ” sequence between Peter running away and the other shoe dropping . It was n’t our favorite episode , but there were five thing about it that we really loved . despoiler ahead …
Joshua Jackson has such great chemistry with his carbon monoxide gas - stars on Fringe that I was n’t sure how an intact installment of just him puzzle out a mystery by himself was going to influence out . And … it was okay . I was kind of shock by what an egocentric slit he is , but I think that might be sort of the point of the installment . I get the sense that if he ’d just let the nice sheriff phone the FBI the first prison term she want to , the case would have been roll up by the 15 - second mark . Mostly , I missed the repose of the gang , and started to get seriously annoyed with Peter after about 20 minutes .
And what sort of sadistic weirdo makes a bozo a mixture CD to avail him stay awake while driving — and then makes the first song on the CD one where an indie rocker croons “ I could sleep , I could sleeeeeeeeeeep , I could sleeeeeeeeeeeeep ” over and over again ? Really . She pretty much merit to lose her worldly lobe , is all I ’m saying .
But there were five things we really loved in this episode :
1 ) Martha Plimpton as Sheriff Mathis . She was rugged , tough , vulnerable , a little kooky , and the gross foil for Peter . If she ’d been too self - assured , she never would have gotten sucked into believe his nonsense for as long she did . For a Edgar Albert Guest - genius - of - the - calendar week , she feel like she had a really flesh - out backstory , and she really benefited from all the screen time Olivia , Walter , Astrid and Broyles did n’t get this clip around .
2 ) Peter getting to be Walter for once . He even get to do a weird experiment of his own . Most of his “ detective ” work in the episode was sort of wack , but then he pulled out that great “ trail the spike in adrenaline ” affair — which seemed even sillier than the show ’s common pseudoscience but was still awful — I was all aroused to see that Peter really was a chip off the old stop .
3 ) Walter Vs . Poptarts . Do n’t seek to envenom Walter Bishop with your potassium bromate ! ! There ’s a reason this scene has already become a Youtube classic . ( The best clip of it on Youtube is n’t embeddable , but here ’s a pretty skilful copy . ) Generally the scenes of Walter falling aside were classic , and it was hard not to find like “ thank the adept ” when John Noble finally appeared on our projection screen after being AWOL for a openhanded clump of sequence .
4 ) The crazy moments of paranoia . I did like the occasional import of trippiness and spookiness where you inquire if Peter is going bonkers , specially the “ chasing phantasm in the wood ” conniption .
5 ) The net hour of the installment . frankly , this was the part that thrilled me . The brief glimpse of “ Walternate , ” who ’s apparently in a position of authority on the other side , was middling salient . And the hints that we ’re about to see Peter and his existent dada lastly hash things out . Not to advert all the hooey in the super - abbreviated teaser for next workweek ’s sequence , with the brunette Olivia and the oppressive substitute world — if there ’s any justice in the multiverse , it should be larger-than-life .
So yeah , a bit of a treading - water episode , except for what it sets up for this week . But what did you retrieve ?
