image of deep space are serenely beautiful . So much so that it ’s well-situated to forget just how vastly violent and monolithic everything is out there . Over at the Bad Astronomy Blog , Phil Plait shares an unbelievable imageof the Carina Nebula , a window into the heart of the Milky Way :
It ’s got it all : mavin of every color constellate a degenerate background of gaseous state , itself beam crimson or reflecting blueing , silhouette in great ostentatious sweep oar of rubble . shock absorber waves screen the gas , compressing it here and there in arc , loop , banner , and filaments .
It ’s preposterous , and spectacular .
Thefull - size imageis 13,000×9,000 pixels huge , and cropped down to show some of the more interesting parts in a4,500×4,500 interlingual rendition here . The original was takenearlier this yearwith the HAWK-1 sensing element on the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory .
For some context , Plait points out that the bright star in the down in the mouth left corner , Eta Carina , nearly go supernova in 1843 , but brace itself by pooping out two mint of matter — each about the sizing of our Lord’s Day . altogether addict . [ Bad Astronomy Blog ]
