The USAF has done a plenty of borderline insane thing in its time , but appropriating the legacy of MLK Jr. on MLK Day might take the Crazy Cake : the government now say King would be proud of our nuclear arsenal .
In a shortsighted post title , insanely , “ Dr. King ’s Dream for the Global Strike Team , ” the Air Force Global Strike Command brush aside most every undivided facet of MLK ’s living , life history , ideal , workplace , beliefs , business organization , thoughts , speeches , and committal to writing . Nevermind that King was perhaps the world ’s big icon of non - violence . Nevermind that he address out explicitly against atomic weapons . Nevermind any of that . He talked about black people , and there are black people in the Air Force , so , uh , pro - nuke MLK QED ?
Dr. King would be lofty to see our Global Strike team – comprise of Airmen , civilian and contractor from every wash , church doctrine , background and religion – standing side - by - side secure the most potent weapons in the U.S. arsenal remain the believable bedrock of our internal DoD . . . Our team must overlook our differences to see perfection as we maintain and operate our artillery system . . . Maintaining our commitment to our Global Strike squad , our families and our nation is a fitting testimonial to Dr. King as we celebrate his legacy .
No . He would n’t be majestic . He ’d be disgusted , ashamed , and terrify . “ maintain our dedication to our Global Strike squad ” is n’t a “ meet tribute to Dr. King , ” it ’s an insult to him . This is the opponent of reality.—a reality in which Dr. King warned that “ mankind faces the threat of being plunged into the abyss of atomic disintegration , ” write of “ my hate for this most colossal of all evils , ” and “ a militaristic stairway into the hell of nuclear annihilation . ”
To be clear , Air Force , say this :
It is no longer a selection , my friends , between violence and nonviolent resistance . It is either nonviolence or nonentity . And the alternative to disarmament , the alternative to a greater pause of nuclear tryout , the alternative to strengthening the United Nations and thereby demilitarize the whole Earth , may well be a civilisation plunged into the abyss of annihilation , and our earthly habitat would be transformed into an inferno that even the mind of Dante could not ideate .
