McLean explained that he’s applied a great deal of what he learned in an intensive outpatient program for mental health in Arizona to how he and his wife — with whom he shares daughtersLyric, 6, andElliott, 10 — communicate. Now, he said he’s better focused on listening and having empathy. “Normally I would twist it and make it about me. Not anymore,” he said. “By us kind of approaching things that way, it’s been much, much healthier.”

He added, “It’s taken this time apart for us to really do some serious growing and understanding and listening.”

The couple announced their “temporary” separation after 11 years of marriage together in March. At the time, they shared a joint statement: “Marriage is hard, but worth it. We have mutually decided to separate temporarily to work on ourselves, and on our marriage with the hope of building a stronger future. The plan is to come back together and continue to nurture our love for one another and our family. We ask for respect and privacy at this time.”

The statement continued: “Separation is hard enough without the commentary, please be kind and remember there are children involved.”
