TheOcean Photographer Of The Yearwinners have been announce , and among the many categories you may spot some truly wild animal conduct . The jack fish in the above exposure has n’t been eaten , and nor has the jellyfish become its dinner .

In the mysterious and life-threatening sea , these two animal have formed a curious symbiosis in which the jak tuck itself inwardly for a good hiding spot ( like thesefish in a salp ) . Such a move would spell destruction for some animals , but jacks meet for their art .

“ The small Portuguese man-of-war will sting , but the fish will build immunity to the toxin , ” explain lensman Katherine Lu in astatement . “ The Portuguese man-of-war then provide a dependable haven for the Pisces the Fishes against larger ocean predator while the jellyfish is pushed through the water column by the fish , increase its ability to feed . ”

Lu earned 2nd space in the Ocean Portfolio Award . In at 1st place for that family was Shane Gross whose selection of images really captures the alien nature of nautical and aquatic babies . One that really catches the eye is a ghostly dustup of baby plainfin midshipman fish ( Porichthys notatus ) that are still attached to their yolk sac . Gross snap the mini ghouls in British Columbia , Canada , and apparently they were n’t alone .

“ They are guarded over by their Padre until they are fully grown enough to float out from under the rock they are live on in the intertidal zona and swim to ocean profoundness , ” Grosssaid .

Another mesmerizing shot from Gross captured the delightfully round underbellies of tadpole he break down while snorkeling . “ westerly toad tadpole migrate from the safer deep part of a Vancouver Island lake to the sunstruck shallow to feed on algae and other organic matter , ” Gross said . It ’s not always so easy to pin the tadpole to the species , and the hunt for sometadpoles ' identities has take X .

Unlike the protective father of the baby plainfin midshipman , squid must take a more hands - off glide path to parenting their many , many offspring , as we see in Gross ’s snapshot of the opalescent calamari , Doryteuthis opalescens .

“ The female person will posit 100 to 300 bollock into the sand and cover them with a sticky centre to anchor them to the seabed and protect them from predators , ” he say . “ The male squid uses its fifth branch , ring the hectocotylus , to grab the distaff and insert spermatophores . Eggs present at the bottom of the ocean excite other females to lay their eggs so that immense bailiwick of the eggs can result . ”

While it was the small and foreign that captured this writer ’s heart , the overall winner for the 2024 Ocean Photographer Of The Year depart to a much larger , but incredibly rare spectacle . Rafael Fernández Caballero contain the deed with an image of a rareBryde ’s whaleabout to devour a heart - shaped decoy orb .

“ A alimentation frenzy is the biggest show on Earth for me , " Caballerosaid . The smallest beast on earth , plankton , pull in come-on balls of sardines and , in turn , elephantine giant show up . I was lucky to witness this show off Baja California Sur at the conclusion of 2023 . Due to El Niño and warmer temperatures , dissimilar metal money joined the party and I witnessed huge numbers of attractively coloured Dorado and gravid groups of ocean lions that were attracted by the bait balls . The highlight was this whale coming out of nowhere with its backtalk wide undefendable . ”
