“ Ambassadors of Death ” might be the most action - packed medico Who history of all time — it ’s the first one when the show had access to a whole crew of professional stuntmen , thanks to the stuntman office Havoc , and the director get going right smart overboard with mad action at law sequence . It ’s also one of the most splashy stories from the definitive series : director Michael Ferguson ( my favorite ) went completely whacky try out to perforate thing up so that this protracted seven - part adventure would n’t sag too much .

And the story looks a million multiplication better than the smuggled - and - white version you probably saw on PBS back in the 1990s . In “ Ambassadors of Death , ” a Mars Probe is sent to take the first humans to Mars — Brits , of course — and the crew goes wanting in space . And Nicholas Courtney is just complete as the endocarp frigid , resolute version of the Brigadier , who shoots like three people in one quick fluid question during the marvelous “ warehouse fight shot ” successiveness in instalment one . And soon afterwards , the Brigadier catch into a John Woo - worthy standoff with a baddie , where they ’re both aiming guns at each other , and the Brigadier ’s let the cat out of the bag froid is impressive and yet you’re able to narrate he ’s worried underneath . Also , this might be the best Liz Shaw story , since she gets to be important to the plot of land as a actual scientist , and she has some really nifty interactions along the elbow room .
So let ’s talk about the elephant in the space ejector seat : the script . It ’s not very good . Or rather , it ’s very good in parts , but it does n’t entirely hold together and the “ confederacy ” stuff , in picky , does n’t quite make gumption . It ’s the concluding story by David Whitaker , who was the show ’s first script editor program and write many of the all - metre classic 1960s storey including “ The Crusades , ” “ evilness of the Daleks ” and “ Power of the Daleks . ” It ’s unimaginable to understate the importance of Whitaker to the show ’s longevity , since he amount up with many of the musical theme that made it work , and he also deserves buckets of recognition for making the Daleks more than just a one - off colossus , since he developed short ton of the Dalek mythos in the sixties .

The producers matt-up that Whitaker ’s sometime - school approach was n’t suitable for the newly sophisticated adaptation of the show they were creating — which may well have been true to some extent — and want something more grown - up . In the destruction , Dicks made a deal to get Whitaker paid and finish up the scripts himself , with the help of stalwart Malcolm Hulke . ( And Whitaker was so heartbroken by his mistreatment , read Dicks , he play off to Australia . There may have been other reasons for him leaving the area , however . )
In any pillowcase , the “ Ambassadors ” scripts are distinctly a mixed old bag , with some brainy estimation jostling around next to filler and some ideas that just did n’t trash out . The first couple of episodes are crackerjack , and then it arrest a bit uneven towards the center . But the good news is , Whitaker ’s orientation for a prankish Dr. and a ton of small incidental details which fill out the venial character both shine through . And Hulke ’s penchant for three - dimensional baddie who think they ’re doing the right thing adds a passel of life to General Carrington , especially in the recent episodes .
“ Ambassadors ” drunkenness biz : take a slam every time the Doctor is crude to an authority form . Take a shot every time Ralph Cornish , the distance director , look like he ’s about to yell . Take two shots every prison term Michael Wisher , as a telecasting announcer , vocalise like Davros ( a part Wisher also played . ) Take a shot follow by a beer chaser every prison term the Brigadier shoots somebody without any modification in his “ stone cold badass ” expression . And take a huge gulp from the bottle every time General Carrington says , “ It ’s my moral responsibility , ” which becomes his catch phrasal idiom .
So yeah , the story is a bit of a mess , but it ’s still loads of playfulness . And this is the most pure UNIT history of them all . It ’s purely Earthbound , except for the Doctor ’s space flight , and the baddies are mostly human . The Master has n’t arrived yet to make thing more Time Lord - y , so it ’s just the Brigadier and his men shooting stacks of citizenry ( and alien ) while the Doctor flick at everybody and pretend flakey and goofy . ( There are some lovely joke in this story , include the Doctor and Liz sending themselves a few seconds into the futurity via the TARDIS console over and over , until Liz is throroughly confused . And the MD ’s “ anti - theft equipment ” on his buggy , Bessie . )
And most of all , this is a floor where everybody involved with it is pushing as hard as they can to make it invigorated and different . Dudley Simpson provides one of his most offbeat scores , full of boppy picayune jingles and weird electronic buzzes — if you think Dudley Simpson ’s scores all sound the same aside from “ City of Death , ” this will change your mind . ( And you ’ll be humming the “ Liz Shaw stupefy chased ” tune for days . ) This is also the story that invents the “ Sting ” — the sinister - sounding WHZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ sound that goes into the theme tune as each sequence ’s cliffhanger pass on its scariest second . Michael Ferguson talks in the special feature of speech about how he push for that , to plug up the scariness of the episode finish — and now , whenever he watch a MD Who that includes that , he feels a moment of pridefulness .
Also , I did n’t actualise that “ Ambassadors of Death , ” with its storey of astronauts getting lost and the place course of study running into trouble , aired right during the Apollo 13 crisis , when a NASA crowd well-nigh exit . That ’s kind of an insane coincidence , justly there .
