When you hear the name “ Billy Crystal , ” revulsion is notthe first genre that bounce to heed . But Crystal demonstrate an inspired selection to leadBefore , Apple TV+‘s new drama . Because we ’re not used to seeing him navigate such a dark , disturbing story , there ’s a current of unusual energy that runs throughBefore — which only aids the disorienting mystery that drive its plot .
Crystal plays Dr. Eli Adler , a child head-shrinker who has long particularize in the very toughest lawsuit . But he ’s grown timeworn and does n’t want to do it anymore . The main reason is that he ’s grieve the recent exit of his married woman , Lynn ( Judith Light ) . Suffering from malignant neoplastic disease , she made the decision to take her own life , dying in a bathtub in their New York City flat .
obsess by her memory — often almost literally , as he imagine seeing and hearing her , and frequently flaunt back to that grim day he found her — he ’s overdue for retirement , and the many interested people around him ( his therapist , his daughter , his granddaughter , his best admirer , his assistant , the social worker who helps with his young patients , his aesculapian colleagues , even his adorable andiron ) can say he ’s struggle .

But much in the same way that Eli ca n’t follow to terminal figure with losing Lynn , he ca n’t let go of what he says will be his last case . And honestly , the case is so uncanny you ca n’t really pick him . It involves a son named Noah ( Jacobi Jupe ) who somehow shows up at Eli ’s apartment the nightbeforehe ’s assigned to Eli as a affected role . Despite an inordinately tolerant foster mammy ( Rosie Perez ) give care for him , Noah ’s clearly get a lot going on .
From the outside , other characters watch him pilot into violent rages and sudden fits , then refusing to address ( or , as Eli witness , speaking in Eli ’s own voice , as well as in a language that ’s not English ) . Meanwhile , on the inside , the witness can see that he ’s also having visions of seep water , creeping worms , and other minatory horror .
This would be enough to fuddle any experient doctor , but Eli himself is also having horrific nightmares of both the waking and kip variety . And it ’s not just the aftershocks of Lynn ’s painful decline and death — he ca n’t shake the feeling that he and Noah have an strange connection , perhaps even a supernatural one , something Eli has a particularly hard sentence opening up to because he ’s a unswerving man of science .

But there are too many freaky similarity to brush apart , like how all of Noah ’s drawings show a farmhouse — the exact same farmhouse that ’s in a vintage picture Lynn leave behind ; it ’s a place that tugs on some deep part of Eli ’s Einstein that he ca n’t quite puzzle through . And though Noah is of few speech , at one point he face a very confused Eli foursquare in the center and blurts out “ You know what you did . ”
With that fascinating curing - up , Before — create by Sarah Thorp , who also compose many of the episode — sets Eli , and the looker along with him , on a path toward figuring out the on the face of it cosmic link between the Doctor of the Church and his patient , a quest that becomes more pressing for Noah when his irregular behavior makes , well , basically every other grownup around him thatisn’tEli start rumbling about couch him in a mellow - security hospital and cranking up his medication . Since he ’s only eight years onetime , nobody thinks it ’s an ideal solution , but he ’s quickly ladder out of options .
Things presently get increasingly heroic for Eli too . Is he going mad ? Has he been irrevocably damaged by his trauma ? Why does he have this suspicion that he ’s not himself , that he ’s an imposter , that he ’s someone else ?

Beforeends up feel fairly curiously paced ; it has 10 instalment , most just under 30 minutes each , most end with a reveal or cliffhanger that leads into the next instalment . While that sound potentially refreshful , it ’s really not . It can often finger repetitive — Jupe is a talented child actor , but there ’s only so much he can do with “ OMG I’M SCARED , ” and Noah tend to have a meltdown every time Eli ’s just about to horn in some important selective information out of him .
There ’s clearly a mystery propelling all this wretchedness , butBeforewill likely only reward unfeignedly dedicated viewers ; even when Eli forgather speed with his tec work — he ’s coerce to , when all those caring family in his life start to surmise he ’s losing it — it feels like it take eternally to get to the last reveal . Which it does , at last : it ’s not a spoiler to sayBeforewon’t leave you hang up , and it make it at a decision that feel fulfil .
In truth , though , the biggest reveal inBeforeis Crystal himself . There are a few moments of wry levity scattered throughout that echo his previous work , but they ’re buried within a dramatic , frightening framework that showcases an unexpected side of the 76 - year - previous , who ’s also one of the show ’s executive producer . Even thoughBefore‘s taradiddle turns in circles a few too many times , Crystal proves systematically compelling as a weary man driven to confront the impossible — and put his own career and life on the ancestry — to help a young kid he ’s just forgather … but who may not be a stranger .
The first two episodes ofBeforepremiere today on Apple TV+ , with a hebdomadal rollout through December 20 thereafter .
