The footage opened as all sound fairy tale should , a char ’s voice say “ Once Upon A clock time there was a minor named Ella . ”
A beautiful family sit in a simply prosperous pastoral pose give birth the existence most adorable picnic . It ’s clearly babe Cinderella , with her father and her blonde mother . Everything is wonderful , they are all so happy and blond and loving being outdoors … but not for loooong ! Cut into the family ’s gorgeous manor , and OH NO , the female parent faints in their fab program library . The Fatherhood catch her , and literal looks of concern are exchanged all around . Cut to the same pastoral field and picayune Cinderella and Father of the Church are embracing , all in fateful . Looks like the Mother die .
Fast forward , a much older Cinderella played by Lily James ( best remembered as the “ I do what I want ” first cousin from Downton Abbey ) stands in the hallway to welcome her raw Stepmother .
Evil Stepmother Cate Blanchett enter , bust a sensational dress grim with amber embroidered contingent , a smutty veil wrapped tightly across her face , and top off with a monumental , black victorian hat . But more significantly , she is escorting in her pet CT who is being led in on a leash . SHE HAS A CAT ON A LEASH ! ! ! ! ! !
THE EVIL gradation female parent HAS A CAT ON A LEASH . A CAT . ON . A. LEASH .
It is , awe-inspiring . We can only assume that this oxford gray queen , who totally flicks his paw like he ’s rubbing his bedding material in Cinderella ’s expression , is key out Lucifer ( like in the the animate movie ) . How I even manage to look out a thing after the “ African tea on a leash ” reveal , I will never bonk — but I ’m still freaking out about it . And the footage only get secure .
The next few scenes were just a flurry of dresses . So many jewel - toned dresses . Gorgeous mythic very Disney frock . Not necessarily true to the time , but it ’s a faggot story , carry on with it . At one point Blanchett walks in with a monolithic cheetah mark corps de ballet that is just fantastic and mythological and goes well with her “ I ’m watching you ” leer she always seems to be wear .
The two malevolent Stepsisters are also revealed and oh my god it ’s Daisy from Downton Abbey ( Sophie McShera ) and she looks completely dissimilar . Totally unlike . McShera plays Drizella . Her hairsbreadth is curly and coiffe . Holliday Grainger is the other stepsister Anastasia . They have matching updos and her hair is dyed red . Which is also canon from the Disney movie . They are both wearing a lot of jewel tone mustard and garden pink , which is also just like the animize movie .
A homo approaches and have everyone know that Cinderella ’s father has dead . Things interchange for Cindy , and now she ’s the servant girl . Cut to a close up of those sure-enough - timey servant Vanessa Bell ringing off the hook . It ’s the sisters , and Drizella cackles , “ Cinderella , that ’s what we ’ll call you . ” Her eyes bulge and her font skew up into a hideous yack . Goodbye , Daisy from Downton Abbey . fantastic .

A PAIR OF CG computer mouse WITH VESTS LOOK ON FROM THE STAIRS . The mice have wear , and it works , because this moving-picture show is literally a unadulterated genuine translation of the animate classic with additional Robb Stark scenery . How could there not be mice !
Cinderella will NOT go to the ball . She ’s crying on the balcony find out her dreams become flat when short a haggard old cleaning woman appears in their star sign . Which is weird because that would intend that she snap off into their house and that is illegal . But wait it ’s actually Helena Bonham Carter in old lady face and she articulate , “ I ’m your Fairy Godmother of course . ” And then bippity bop pity boo , she deform into a gorgeous , blonde Helena Bonham Carter ( mention she never in reality utters that classical routine of phrase , but we assume it ’s coming ) . She take care stunning and almost precisely like Glina from Oz but without the down and gigantic arm .
Full disclosure : I was not on board with HBC being cast as the nance godmother , but I was wrong . She is sensational . She has this little angelic charm and together they root through the green house looking for a sizable veggie that she can transubstantiate into a carriage . Her heart are dubiously mammoth , like someone did something in Wiley Post , but none of the FX are arrange on this movie so those might just be her eye .
The classic carriage is transformed from a pumpkin vine ( evidently ) and it turn into a golden ornate admiration . It ’s really something dramatic and we acquire Disney will be trotting out this show patch every chance they get . Cinderella gets her classic racy frock , but in an interesting tween - directed decision , she wears her hair down , curly and absolutely covered in glister . Her head has been dip in scintillation , so much glitter .
And now the ball . Wow . medicine that was obviously inspire by the Princess Bride theme vocal is blasting , pyrotechnic are being shot off and everyone just looks gorgeous . get in Prince Charming in a full ointment prince suit , which almost get me turn into a howling , cartoon wolf . He asks her to trip the light fantastic toe ! They are nervous ! He forgets the word “ dance ! ” They giggle ! And somehow I ’m view as the person ’s hand next to me and we are just sighing .
We all know where this is going — nothing I ’ve reported on here is new for Cinderella , but that ’s the point ! The absolute dedication to the source material shoot right on in the Disney sweet situation . It is light that director Kenneth Branagh is a sports fan of the fagot taradiddle , and a fan of what Disney created . Sure there are hatful of newfangled tantrum that were hinted at ( Prince Charming is ensure briefly wall with Game of Thrones ’ Nonso Anozie ) . Plus it ’s gorgeous and some how they may just make mice with undershirt work . Fingers cross for this one : It see really , really good .
