Netflix ’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina isa new series , but is already hold a bit of an identity crisis . And it ’s about how the show deal sexual urge . For being a series about a radical of pansexual Wiccan and warlock — consort to one of the worker , they might all be pansexual — there are some middling disappointing takes on sex .
Before we get into it , I do want to say that there are some things the show does well regarding sex identity and sexuality , though it does come with caution . Sabrina ’s ally Susie Putnam , played by non - binary actor Lachlan Watson , is a theatrical role who does n’t conform to gender norms and is in the midst of explore her grammatical gender identity . Then there ’s Sabrina ’s cousin , Ambrose Spellman ( Chance Perdomo ) . The character is pansexual , meaning someone who ’s appeal to others regardless of gender identity . This is anestablished partof the character , and it comes across onscreen — through flirtation , intimate activity , and his relationship .
In promoting Chilling Adventures of Sabrina , Netflix has made a large good deal out of the fact that Ambrose is pansexual — not only because it matches his portrayal in the comic account book , but because there are n’t many pansexual character on television . However , it seems the serial may have a whole lot more representation in that regard . During my Vancouver set sojourn , Adeline Rudolph , who plays Agatha ( one of the Weird Sisters ) , proposed that all witches and warlock on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina are pansexual .
“ What I love is all warlock and witches are pansexual , so we swing both ways , which I love . I love that idea of freedom and just being exposed to anything , ” Rudolph said . “ This idea of these witches just have no job with their eubstance , no matter of what their shape is or how they wait , and being as sexual as they want to be . It ’s unclear whether this is one actress ’s interpretation of the characters that she and the others are playing , or a bona fide part of the show ( we reached out to showrunner Roberto Aguirre - Sacasa for clarification ) . But if Rudolph is correct and all beldame and warlock are pansexual on the serial , the show has done a poor chore of showing it ( and discussing it , as “ swing both ways ” mean attraction along the gender binary ) . When it do to depictions of sexuality , this is n’t the show ’s most significant misstep .
All three of theactresses play the Weird Sisters , along with Gavin Leatherwood ( who plays Sabrina ’s possible beau Nicholas ) , described their eccentric as being very sexually unloosen , something that they say comes across in the serial itself . It ’s all about lust and passion and sex , ” Leatherwood said . “ This matter that Sabrina possesses is this understanding of the other side , the other human race . What humans experience as lovemaking is a very powerful affair . ”
This love / lust duality not only muddles the plot of ground , but it creates issue for its characters .
You could charge the enchantress ’ and warlock ’ lack of making love on the fact that they ’re evil . That ’s the case with Father Blackwood , who role player Richard Coyle described as not only unapologetically evil , but also a “ ravening hussy . ” But Leatherwood also discover Nicholas as being “ proficient at heart , ” so there ’s at least one warlock who is n’t vicious but still follows that “ no honey ” rule .
So maybe they ’ve signed their mortal over to Satan , and with that came a requirement that they do n’t experience sexual love for anyone but him . But is that want of passion by option , or something Satan physically shoot away from them ? If it ’s the former , they would n’t need to “ discover ” what love is . They ’d already bang it , and sense it . They ’d just be stifle it , which is not the same matter . And the latter is inconceivable , as it is light Aunt Zelda and Aunt Hilda both love Sabrina . Oh , and let ’s not draw a blank how Hilda spiked Ambrose ’s admirer Luke ’s coffee with a love potion — to feel that thing , you hump , warlocks are n’t supposed to feel . Whoops .
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina establish us a group of witches and warlock that are befool as sexually liberated , but are actually quite discredited . This would be all veracious if it came with some sort of deeper understanding , but it does n’t . Their sexuality comes from a place of loss and pain , but it ’s not presented that way . They just focus on the tawdry , without exploring what ’s underneath .
And now that Sabrina has signed the Dark Lord ’s record , we ’ve enter a whole new region of problems that the show is n’t ready for . Does it think Sabrina has lost her power to love as well , or get anything other than sexual gratification ? Might be hard for us to take root for her and Harvey to get back together if she ’s lose her power to love again . It ’s remove the solvent is no , that they will “ Special One ” her out of the situation . But that wo n’t fix the larger problem of sex on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina . It ’ll just be one girl ’s elision to a really unfit rule .
