In Real Life , the new comedian out from Cory Doctorow and Jen Wang , is an adaptation of Doctorow ’s 2004 story“Anda ’s Game . ”Ten years later , this tale of a new distaff gamer learning about wider societal issues through a MMORPG still holds a valuable message for gamers ( and non - gamers ) of all ages .

“ Anda ’s Game ” is perhaps my favorite of Doctorow ’s short stories , but I admit that I was a bit unbelieving when I see that it had been adapted as a full - duration graphic novel . In accession to the prose story , “ Anda ’s Game ” already exists as an audio story , a short comic , and a source for Doctorow ’s novel For the Win . But this adjustment , rewritten and illustrated by Wang ( who also did the implausibly lovelyKoko Be beneficial ) is , in my vox populi , the best version of the account .

Anda is a young girl who already savor video biz when she ’s invited to play for an all - distaff guild in the massively multiplayer on-line role - play game Coarsegold . In Coarsegold , Anda becomes a sort of idealized version of herself , a problematic and fashionable ogre - killer who earns the esteem of her fellow gild member . After a while , she ’s recruited by a fellow player for a serial of special missions : picking off goldfarmers for cash . At first , Anda views the goldfarmers as cheaters , but after she start a friendship with a goldfarmer in China , her whole worldview opens up .

As Anda begins to interpret what life is like for gamers in other countries , she becomes interested in lying-in organization , in protecting the lilliputian hombre in - plot . In her offline life , Anda changes , too , both in term of how she lay out herself and how she treats others . You canread a preview of the comic over at Tor.com .

We get a fortune to speak with Doctorow and Wang about In Real Life , and how it tally into the current landscape of telecasting game culture .

With all of the GamerGate stuff going on right now , what do you trust that proofreader , especially young daughter , get out of this book ?

Cory Doctorow : The thing that the book tries to do , and that all of the incarnations of this story seek to do , is connect gender imbalance or sex inequities with wider inequity in the populace . And I think that it ’s well-to-do to get lost in GamerGate in the noise of the misogynism . The misogyny is a feature of much wider questions of unfairness and inequity .

A bad thing that could come from the assaults of GamerGate would be for hoi polloi to miss the fact that what ’s happened to them is part of a wider normal that bechance to mass for lots of reasons : for gender orientation or racial reasons or class reasons and so on . And the best affair that could come from this is for multitude to make that connection and realize that their struggle ca n’t be won until everyone ’s struggle is succeed .

And so I hope that young girlfriend are , first of all , inspired to find solidarity with other new girls , because that ’s one of the principal theme of this book , but then to make that solidarity wider .

Jen Wang : I think some of the more disappointing thing I ’ve heard from young woman online who are concerned in biz is that they feel scared . They feel like it ’s something they might have been concerned in , but now it just seems a small bit unfriendly , and evidently I ca n’t blame them . But on the other hand , there ’s a tidy sum of people who are trying in the whole Stop GamerGate , with the hashtags and develop the word out . masses do care . Sexism wo n’t really go away and misogyny wo n’t go away , but there are more citizenry on their [ the daughter ’ ] side than not . So I think already there are a lot more girls getting into game , period . So I recall we ’re on a good trajectory . Hopefully , because of all this GamerGate , people , girls especially , see people who are being supportive and will campaign for them , even if right now it ’s a little mussy .

We do n’t really talk about it a lot in the record , but Anda is make believe games herself at the schooltime . Just like for me with comics , if you read something and you palpate like you have idea , you could just wholly do it now . There are so many boulevard for you to just make your own thing in - house and there ’s nobody who can really stop you .

What is it about “ Anda ’s Game ” that has lent itself to being adapted even ten years afterward ?

Edgard Lawrence Doctorow : Well , I suppose because it ’s because it ’s a news report about games , sex , labor , globalism , paternalistic walled garden . All these are theme that are woven deep into the construction of the networked world and are effect that are still as primal as they were ten years ago , if not more so .

One of the thing that I find really interesting in this version is the characters at Anda ’s school . I remember in the short story , we do see that once she becomes more socially aware globally , she becomes more socially aware at home . But I thought it was very interesting that we have that moment where she ’s connecting with another girl at her schooltime .

Wang : Because there were elements of that in the original short story , I wanted to keep that . A portion of the element had changed and the plot line change , but I want to keep that ingredient of as the world changes , so does her real liveliness . I felt that I needed to have a little bit of a mirror with the dismissive attitudes that the boys in the gamer club at school with the goldfarmers , with this rather elect sense of “ These multitude do n’t belong here because they do n’t in reality do the thing that we ’re passionate about . ” And it twist out that the girl just wanted to get together in and be a part of something and construct a community . And I cerebrate Anda is able-bodied to recognise that and bridge the spread between those two parties .

Doctorow : Goldfarmers in China , after play for 12 60 minutes , loosen by play some more . The things that you do all the time you get upright at , and so socializing is one of those thing . I remember that ’s something that Mizuko Ito ’s research and also Dana Boyd ’s research really put up out , that this very humane way of thinking about how new people expend networks , that using networks to socialize makes you better at being sociable .

It does seem that the whole message of the book is that , amidst this all , there are tangible human beings behind the avatar .

Doctorow : In Real Life ! That there is no “ not real ” life . That our substantial life are mediated by building and fluorescent fixture tube firing and clothing made of celluloid fiber and lots of thing that are n’t primordial to the human shape , and yet they do n’t make our life less tangible . The fact that we arbitrate it through another level of applied science , that ’s not the tipping stop between real and fake .
