focus over satellite photo of remote Mexican jungle area , scientist believed they saw hints of an ancient Maya metropolis hide in the foliage . And on Friday , a group of archaeologists guide by Ivan Sprajc announce they ’d visited the area and made an incredible find .

Crumbling , palatial ruins shroud 54 acres of land in this western Yucatán region , including the remains of buildings , ceremonial sculpture , and stela ( rock monoliths ) covered in authorship . Sprajc knight the urban center Chactún , and he and his team trust it was inhabited during the late Graeco-Roman period of the Maya civilization , roughly 600 - 900 AD . A compounding of climate alteration and war ended the heyday of Maya civilisation roughly 1200 year ago .

Sprajc and his team establish three monolithic complexes with the remains of Great Pyramid — one 75 foot ( 23 meters ) high — as well as ball motor lodge , piazza , homes , altars , bits of painted stucco and stone slabs known as stele . Epigraphers are still poring over inscription at Chactún , but one stele refers to an seeming ruler named K’inich B’ahlam , the researchers say .
This is one of the largest Maya site discovered in the region , and should yield a riches of information about this residential district and its way of life . Though Chactún has never been study by archeologist before , the city has n’t exactly been “ lost ” either . Loggers visited the part a few decades ago and plain did n’t find the ruin were important enough to tell anyone about .
