Thenew trailerforGuillermo del Toro ’s next film has arrived , and boy … Nightmare Alleylooks good . It also has a hell of a stamp , but there ’s so much go on it ’s difficult to parse what ’s happening in the final trailer for the film other than it ’s set in the first one-half of the 20th C , Bradley Cooper appears to meet someone with real psychic business leader and an unfortunate mustache , and there ’s an increase amount of del Toro - panache suspense and apprehension . Still want to check out the trailer ?
Of course you do . But here ’s the official synopsis for the film to serve make sensation of what ’s happening : “ When magnetic but down - on - his - hazard Stanton Carlisle ( Bradley Cooper ) endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena ( Toni Collette ) and her has - been mentalist husband Pete ( David Strathairn ) at a traveling carnival , he crafts a halcyon ticket to winner , using this freshly acquired knowledge to grift the flush elite group of 1940s New York fellowship . With the virtuous Molly ( Rooney Mara ) loyally by his side , Stanton plots to defraud a dangerous tycoon ( Richard Jenkins ) with the aid of a mysterious head-shrinker ( Cate Blanchett ) who might be his most formidable opponent yet . ”
Despite the subject cloth and the director , apparently , it ’s a straightforward noir movie . “ This has no supernatural element , ” del Toro antecedently toldVanity Fair . “ It ’s based completely in a reality universe . There is nothing fantastic . It ’s a very dissimilar movie from my usual , but yes , the claim and my name would make that [ impression ] . ” But then he also said , “ I want to do the universe of discourse of the novel , which is a small gritty , but also strangely magical . It has a very foreign , orphic allure — and mythological . ”

There ’s no reasonableness for him to lie about it being “ normal , ” but it ’s really hard to conceive of the man who directed The Shape of Water , Pan ’s Labyrinth , Crimson Peak , and Pacific Rim would make a film about clairvoyants and mentalists where their great power do n’t add up into maneuver in some fashion . He certainly could , of course , but it feels more probable to me he ’s obliterate the fantastical elements of the cinema from the audience . I suppose I could read the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham that wait on as the celluloid ’s rootage cloth to find out , but I do n’t see that happening .
Nightmare Alley premier in theater on December 17 .
