Every time Disney remakes one of its classic revivify celluloid , the filmmaker face the same challenge . The new picture has to be different enoughto apologize its existencebut also live up to the audience ’s expectations . Maintaining that proportion was among the many challenges Centennial State - writer and director Guy Ritchie had as he tackledthe companionship ’s latest remake , Aladdin .
“ There ’s a sweet touch there , I think , ” Ritchie told io9 . “ That sweet place is you need your nostalgia to be stroke , [ and ] at the same time , there ask to be embellishments and additions , but they need to feel clean and deserving it . Otherwise , that familiar experience can taste rather acrid . ”
With Aladdin , Ritchie straddles that line throughout and almost always in a upright way of life . The canonic tarradiddle is exactly the same as the 1992 animated film . A youthful thief named Aladdin ( Mena Massoud)meets a genie(Will Smith ) and fall in love with a princess named Jasmine ( Naomi Scott ) . But from the very first shot of Ritchie ’s film , and at every turn thereafter , there are changes , both minor and major , that evolve that story and the characters for today ’s audiences .

“ Once you ’re in and you buy into the frequency of how it is that we ’re kick the bucket to tell that tale , then you ’re centripetal to Modern idea and modest jaunts off the well - trodden path , ” Ritchie continues . “ It needs to sense brisk , right ? You do n’t need to just learn it frame for frame . But what you do require is to know that it ’s basically , really more than essentially , loyal to the original . ”
Ritchie acknowledges that the original film is fantabulous , of row . So alteration were only made when he and his squad feel there were was something to improve on , which was n’t always the case .
“ As [ we ] approached certain component in the original [ we ] thought ‘ Could we outdo this in any particular way ? ’ ” Ritchie said . “ And sometimes you could andsometimes you could n’t . But everything was up for ‘ If it can be better , let ’s attempt to better it . ’ ”

So , one small model would be animal . The nefarious Jafar ( Marwan Kenzari ) still has a talking parrot distinguish Iago ( voiced by Alan Tudyk ) , and Jasmine still has a pet Panthera tigris named Rajah , but Ritchie approach those characters in a different direction .
“ We made a determination that our brute were going to find quite genuine . So the parrot ca n’t talk in paragraph , ” Ritchie said . “ We ’re also sample to range the line of being humourous , yet you want to find gravity and the stakes need to be literal . So there ’s quite a caboodle of lines you have to find in guild for it to feel consummate . ”
The biggest alteration in the remake , though , is Princess Jasmine . This sentence around she ’s a much large part of the history , with a more terminated character arc , warm motivations , and sheeven sings a brand new songthat was written for the motion-picture show . In fact , she ’s so much more rife in this variation it may shock fan of the archetype at the commencement . ( She ’s already in the market place during “ One Jump Ahead , ” for instance . ) But that was an essential part of the plastic film Ritchie , and Disney , desire to make this clock time around .

“ If there was anything that could habituate some evolution in this narrative , it was that there need to be a voice founder to Jasmine , ” Ritchie say in a press conference before our interview . “ It just felt like there was an obvious blank there that we could solve on . ”
“ I think it ’s a rattling matter when you have a visual sense for a fictional character and you cogitate , ‘ Oh , I ’d love to see Disney do this with this grapheme ’ and it aline with Guy and our producers , ” Scott added . “ Guy [ talk ] about ‘ equality of challenge , ’ the idea that Jasmine needed more of a challenge in this movie , and it was a natural progression . ”
Making Aladdin straddle that business between the yesteryear and present was a natural progression for Ritchie too . It was the first thing that fall out to him when he was present with the chance to make the film .
“ I remember when I first read the script … I intend there were tweaks that want to be made in fiat to make it funny and modern-day and so on . But I like those challenges , ” Ritchie told io9 “ I like it when you just make up your thinker , there ’s a book on the table you go , ‘ Right . I want to make that . ’ ”
The final challenge will be if interview think the change Ritchie and his squad made , from Jasmine all the way down the line , do what he do out to do — which is to make a plastic film that lets audience feel that nostalgia for the 1992 picture show , but also realize that this is a Modern , update , and suitable Aladdin .
“ I do n’t want to stray too far from what it is that you expect from Disney in the same way as I do n’t want to vagabond too far from what it is you ask from Aladdin , ” he say .
