Gwyneth Paltrowis opening up about why she has shifted her career away from Hollywood films — despite massive success including one Oscar win.
The 46-year-old actress spoke about her decision in an interview withVarietysaying her choice came largely because of how the industry had changed since she came onto the scene.
“I think the movies and the business around them have changed so much in the last 20 years,” Paltrow said, explaining the films she used to make — those with an adult audience — had stopped being made.
“I don’t think any of the movies that I’m known for would get made today,” she continued. “Would they makeThe Royal Tenenbaums?Would they makeThe Talented Mr. Ripley? Would they makeShakespeare in Love?”
Paltrow’s career includes an Oscar win for her portrayal of Viola in the 1998 drama based on Shakespeare’s inspiration forRomeo and Juliet. The actress toldVarietyshe almost didn’t make the film because of her “terrible breakup” withBrad Pittat the time.
“The movie had many iterations. Julia Roberts was going to do it for a long time, and then that version fell apart. It ended up in Miramax, and I was the first person they offered it to,” Paltrow said.

She added, “I was in the middle of a terrible breakup and the idea of going to England and being far from home just seemed… I didn’t even read it. I was just like, ‘I can’t read anything right now. I’m having a really hard time.'”
While Paltrow has taken a step back from Hollywood, the star has remained in pop culture with her role as Pepper Potts in theIron ManandAvengersfilms.
