How ’s this for a truly awful photo ? Shown in the foreground is Space Shuttle Atlantis on Launch Pad A. The shuttlecock in the background is Endeavour , on Launch Pad B. Currently , both bird are locked and lade for launching , should something go wrong up in place with the October 11 Atlantis mission . As Tom explains over at hisAstronomy Blog , receive two shuttles on the pad at the same meter is rare , but it is not a case for fear . When the ISS is not usable for deliverance purposes , as it might not be for this mission , a 2nd shuttlecock is made ready for a quick launch . What is sober , however , is this image is potentially the last of its form . The space shuttle program is schedule for retreat in 2010 , leaving piffling luck for similar shuttle household photos in the future tense . [ NASA , Tom ’s Astronomy Blog ]
