When I was a spry young teen a million years ago ( or more realistically , 15 year ago ) , there was no more all - encompassing cartoon than Teen Titans . It had action mechanism ! Overarching plotlines ! Slade ! So after it was all over and Teen Titans Go ! come along a 10 later , I , like many Teen Titans fans , was n’t enamored .
Robin and the mob still look like the Titans of the show I bonk , albeit quirkier . They had the same voice actors , too ! But the installment were shorter . They were mostly standalone skits . And they were n’t really action - packed or dramatic , they were — pant — comedic . It did n’t feel like the Teen Titans I loved , even if there were some continue elements , and so , I stepped aside — the Teen Titans I know was blend in , replaced by this uncanny skit show that loved fart joke and singing about waffle in adequate measure .
There are still a portion of mass who find that mode about Teen Titans Go ! today — and are more than eager to prompt people of that Go ! is inferior to the original series , peculiarly now thatthe movieis on the way . And now that it turn out the Go ! picture isactually reasonably great , too , you ca n’t mention Teen Titans Go ! without a cavalcade of responses about how it ’s spoilt and dumb , and not a patch on the original , amazing Teen Titans , and so on and so forward . I was , for a time , one of those citizenry , but now I portion out the seemingly unpopular opinion : I love Teen Titans Go !

But the other part of it was that I at long last start up accept that Go ! was n’t trying to be what Teen Titans was , a serious adaptation of the dramatic antecedent of the classic Teen Titans comics . It was joyously dumb as rocks — as a celebration of the fact that superhero comics themselves are also occasionally dumb as rocks .
I mean that in a charming way of life , of course . There is anendearing zaninessto the human race of mirthful books that , because it has endured as a sort of fantastically silly desktop radiation for so long — even hidden away at times , as comics engage the tough and long route to wider espousal in popular cultivation to make the giddy heights they have today , where even the New York Times is dropping Batman spoiler — we lean to take it for granted . The premises are cockeyed , the dramatic play fantastical — it ’s men , women , and space noncitizen in tights with remarkable ability fighting crime . Go ! just lays the inherent absurdity of superhero comics bare as its central conceit , and takes it to the next level by contorting itself into the clownlike , unearthly anatomy possible . In a creation as bizarre as the one populate by DC ’s all right superheroes , everything is at least a little bit silly , and therefore ripe for joking about .
Which means yes , there’ssong / food fights about whether burritos are better than Warren E. Burger , or root retellings thatliberally purloin from other superheroes , DC or otherwise . It meansDarkseid evince up and being voiced by Weird AlYankovic , and it have in mind bizarre cyberpunk spinoff episodes withsurprisingly tricky tunes from another of my teenage obsessions , Fall Out Boy . No butt is too hallowed for Go ! ’s metanarrative - smashing needling — be it the comics , theDC movies , tv set shows , or yes , even the fans themselveswho still like to constantly deplore how bad Teen Titans Go ! is .
In making a goof out of anything the show touch , it takes a jubilant approach to everything DC is , and in its way is an evenly loving embracing of the informant textile as the serious tone of the original Teen Titans was . The latter raises up the spectacular strengths of those dear comic stories , the former acknowledge that beyond that play , there was always a gross ton of playfulness that made us shine in love with those barbarian and eldritch comics in the first blank space . And it ’s the former that even now , as comic book of account media has reached its domineering papa ethnical apex , that still does n’t get the spotlight as often as the interpretations that want to treat the generator material as seriously as possible .
It took a few underhand joke here and there for me to realise this myself , but when I finally did , I could n’t avail but make love Teen Titans Go ! for reminding me of just how delightfully absurd my preferred superheroes can be . That , andthat waffles songreally is bloody heavily to get out of your head sometimes .
