Superbadis old enough to graduate high school.
In celebration of the film’s upcoming 18th anniversary later this year, author and pop culture journalist Andrew Buss released his new book,I AM MCLOVIN: How Superbad Became the Biggest Comedy Hit of Its Generation, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the 2007 comedy hit.
The book details how the film’s writers, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, began working on the script at 13 years old, how they pulled off the raunchier scenes during the filming process and how they helped turn a cast of previously unknown actors into Hollywood stars. Producer Judd Apatow is also interviewed for his take on the magic of the movie in a tome that combines new interviews with aVanity Fairoral historyBuss did in 2022.
Below, in an exclusive excerpt shared with PEOPLE, read about the moment when it was determined blonde Stone would have to dye her hair red for the film — a move that somewhat changed her life.

When it came to the two main love interests, the only other concern was their hair color. Martha MacIsaac and Emma Stone were both brunettes at the time, though Stone is a natural blonde. When someone asked Apatow for his advice, he just said, “Well, maybe it could be red or something?”
“So we dyed her hair red, which I think she had never done before,” says Apatow. “And since then, she has cursed me because now people love her with red hair and she’s had to live with that for a lot of her adult life. It was a real tossed-off thought from someone who knows nothing about makeup and hair.”
